At Eco Promo, we believe that commerce can be a powerful force for good. Beyond simply promoting brands through sustainable merchandise, we’re deeply committed to nurturing the ecosystems that support life—and livelihoods.

One such commitment is our support of the Limpopo Riverine Restoration Project, a unique conservation partnership between landowners along the Limpopo River and local communities, particularly the Mapakoni Community in the Vhembe District. Together, we are working to restore a critically endangered habitat: the Lowveld Riverine Forest.

Why Biodiversity Matters Now More Than Ever

This year’s International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May 2025) is themed “Be Part of the Plan”, and we’re answering that call through action. Biodiversity is the foundation of a healthy environment—it fuels our food systems, supports our water sources, stabilises the climate, and preserves cultural traditions.

The Limpopo River basin is home to endemic and endangered tree species, birds like the Pel’s Fishing Owl and Southern Ground Hornbill, and rural communities that have stewarded this land for generations. But over the years, unsustainable practices, border fence clearings, overgrazing, and severe flooding have stripped much of the natural forest along the riverbanks.

What We’re Doing About It

With your support, Eco Promo donates 3% of every sale to this on-the-ground initiative. Here’s how that money is making a real impact:

🌱 Indigenous Tree Nursery

A nursery, established on a local landowner’s farm, grows indigenous trees like Fever Tree, Marula, Baobab, Leadwood, and Sycamore Fig from seed. These seedlings are later planted along damaged parts of the river, helping restore the natural canopy and stabilise the banks.

👩🏽‍🌾 Community Empowerment

Women from the Mapakoni Community are central to this initiative. They earn an income nurturing saplings until they’re ready for replanting. This not only restores biodiversity but supports families with dignified, land-based livelihoods.

🌍 Cultural and Environmental Restoration

The Tshivenda and Tsistonga-speaking people of the region remain deeply connected to la Mupo—nature and all of creation. The restoration work supports their Indigenous Knowledge Systems and sustainable harvesting traditions, ensuring their way of life can continue.

In Closing: A Forest Is More Than Trees

A forest is a living, breathing system—home, heritage, and hope. The Lowveld Riverine Forest is one of South Africa’s most endangered habitats, but through small, consistent contributions, we’re proving that nature is resilient.

Let’s keep planting. Let’s keep restoring. Let’s be part of the plan.
